The essential foundation of kung fu and wushu — training balance, strength, and agility
马步
Horse Stance
Horse Stance (Ma Bu)
Stand with feet wider than the shoulders, squatting until the thighs are parallel to the floor, back straight, as if sitting on a horse. Builds lower-body endurance and stability.
弓步
Bow Stance
Bow Stance (Gong Bu)
Front knee bent to 90 degrees, back leg straight, both feet flat on the floor. Used for attacking, defending, and delivering power.
仆步
Drop Stance
Drop Stance (Pu Bu)
Squat very low, sitting on one heel with the other leg extended straight to the side, foot pointing forward.
虚步
Empty Stance
Empty / Cat Stance (Xu Bu)
All body weight on the back leg, the front foot lightly touching the floor, ready to kick or move quickly.
歇步
Cross Stance
Cross / Rest Stance (Xie Bu)
Cross the legs while lowering into a seated position, weight on the front leg, back leg touching with the ball of the foot. Used to evade or change direction.
