The foundational weapon — train power and rhythm

The Shaolin Staff

The staff (棍/gùn) is the most fundamental Shaolin weapon and the first one every Shaolin temple disciple learns. As the saying goes, “棍为百兵之祖” — the staff is the ancestor of all weapons.

Training with the staff develops power, rhythm, and full-body coordination. It is an essential foundation before moving on to other weapons.

What You'll Learn in 1 Hour

Divided into 4 parts, from the basics to real application

Part 1

Stretching & Warm-Up

Prepare the body before picking up a weapon. Stretch the arms, shoulders, back, and legs to prevent injury and improve flexibility.

Part 2

Basic Staff Techniques

Practice basic techniques drawn from real staff combat. The fundamental kungfu stances matter greatly, as they let you strike with the staff powerfully.

Master Zhu leads students through simple swinging techniques so they become familiar with the staff's weight and rhythm.

Part 3

Paired Attack & Defense

Students pair up to drill attacking and defending until fluent. When done correctly, it flows like a continuous current.

If it isn't quite right, Master Zhu demonstrates the correct way and explains how to apply it in real combat.

We must be the master of the weapon, not let the weapon master us. Don't force the staff — let it swing naturally, going with the flow.

Part 4

Staff Forms & Demonstration

Master Zhu reviews the Shaolin staff forms with the students, then has them practice.

At the end of class, each student is called to demonstrate the form they practiced in front of Master Zhu and their classmates, to receive feedback and improve.
